Rainy-day boredom busters: 7 indoor games that tire out your dog

No walk today? Scent games, food puzzles, short trick sessions and a living-room obstacle course give your dog real mental exercise indoors.

Short, wet and dark days cut walks short. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) points out that enrichment keeps a dog's mind sharp, burns energy, reduces stress and helps prevent problem behaviors, and most of it works fine in a living room. Here are seven ideas from AAHA's indoor list, plus the gear that makes them easier.

1. Treat scavenger hunt

Depending on breed, a dog's nose is roughly 10,000 to 100,000 times more sensitive than ours. Hide treats around a room, starting with easy spots, and make it harder as your dog catches on.

2. Muffin-tin puzzle

Put treats in a few cups of a muffin tin and cover every cup with a toy or crumpled paper. Your dog has to sniff out which cups hide the treats.

3. Towel snuffle mat

Sprinkle kibble on a towel, fold it a few times, and let your dog nose it open.

4. Make a meal last

Serving part of dinner from a food toy turns two minutes of gulping into fifteen minutes of work. AAHA suggests freezing stuffed rubber toys to make them last even longer. Use part of the normal daily food so the calories don't add up, and choose a toy size that can't fit into the back of your dog's mouth.

5. Five-minute trick session

Teach something new: "shake," "spin," "touch." AAHA recommends keeping sessions to 5–10 minutes to avoid frustration.

6. Living-room obstacle course

Use couch cushions, chairs and a broomstick laid on two books. Keep it low and stable, on a non-slip surface, and suited to your dog's age and fitness.

7. Hide and seek

Sneak into another room, call your dog, and celebrate when they find you.

Keep toys interesting

Split toys into small groups and rotate them every few days, so old favorites feel new again. Check them regularly, and throw away anything broken enough to be swallowed.
