Do slow feeders actually help? What they can and can't do
Slow feeders and lick mats are everywhere. Here's what they're genuinely good for — and where the claims outrun the evidence.

If your dog inhales dinner in ten seconds, a slow feeder looks like an obvious fix. Mostly, it is. But it's worth being clear about what these bowls actually do.
What slow feeders are good for
Slowing gulpers down. Ridges and mazes force your dog to work around obstacles, turning a ten-second meal into a few minutes. Many owners find this reduces the gulp-and-regurgitate cycle.
Enrichment. Working for food is natural for dogs. Food puzzles, stuffed toys and lick mats add a small but genuine dose of mental stimulation to every day — useful for young, bored or recovering dogs.
Calm-down moments. Licking is self-soothing for many dogs. A lick mat smeared with yogurt or wet food is a brilliant distraction during nail trims, baths or thunderstorms.
Where the claims get ahead of the evidence
You'll often see slow feeders marketed as preventing bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus, or GDV), a life-threatening emergency most common in large, deep-chested dogs. The research on GDV risk factors is mixed, and eating speed is only one of several factors that have been studied. A slow feeder is a reasonable choice for a gulper, but it is not bloat prevention. If you have a high-risk breed, talk to your vet about risk factors and — in some cases — a preventive surgery called gastropexy.
Know the signs of bloat regardless: a swollen or tight belly, unproductive retching, restlessness and drooling. This is an emergency; go to a vet immediately.
Picking the right one
- Material: plastic is light and cheap; stainless steel is easier to sanitise and doesn't scratch; silicone lick mats bend for cleaning.
- Difficulty: too hard and your dog gives up (or flips the bowl). Start easy.
- Cleanability: deep grooves trap food. Dishwasher-safe is worth paying for.
- Supervision: many puzzles and mats aren't chew toys. Pick them up after use.
And for cats?
Cats benefit from slower, smaller meals too, and many are notoriously poor drinkers. A water fountain gives them moving water, which many cats prefer. Keep it clean and replace filters on schedule, or the fountain becomes the reason they won't drink.
